NIA Memories

Today being the summer solstice, I can't hep but reminisce about last year's NIA art show, which took place on the summer solstice. Art of the Solstice featured work by Natalie Walser, Jerry Sacher, Christina Bosco, Dean Johnson and Terrie Byrne (shown l-to-r in the photo above). Great memories!

This anniversary also gets me thinking about our next show, NIA Fine Art Friday, which will take place Friday, December 2, 2016. We look forward to exhibiting with Christopher Berry, with whom we have been working all year on various NIA fundraisers.

Our Indiegogo campaign has officially closed, but stay tuned for news about more fundraising efforts from NIA, including a Summer Wine Tasting!

Unfortunately, You Be The Artist Night has been cancelled due to low registration. I blame the beautiful weather we've been having in Chicago! Who wants to be stuck indoors?

We will hopefully be able to bring you this class again at a future date. If you'd like to receive announcements regarding our NIA events, please send a brief request to our e-mail address,

In other news, there are just a few hours left in our Indiegogo fundraising campaign for NIA Fine Art Friday! We could really use your help, so please bounce over to the campaign using this link.

2 Days Left!

There are only 2 days left in our fundraiser campaign! We're so grateful to the 2 people who have donated so far, but it's not enough. If you have just one dollar to spare, please help us fund our exhibit, NIA Fine Art Friday! We cannot do this without your support.

Here is the URL for our Indiegogo campaign: Click on the link, or copy and paste it into your browser. If you read our campaign page, you will learn about the history of NIA, our plans for the exhibit, and reasons why you should consider making a donation.

If you can't contribute even a dollar, we understand. You can still do us a solid by sharing the campaign URL on your social media! Please stress the fact that time is running out....

From all of us NIA participants, Thank You!

New Video Update

We're almost a week into our NIA Fine Art Friday Fundraiser, and some early donations have gotten us off to a great start! If you have just $5 to spare, we would ask you to help us get closer to our goal; and if you cannot contribute at this time, we understand. You can still do your part by sharing our campaign on your favorite social media. Just use this link:

We have uploaded a slightly updated video to our campaign. It features a few new and improved photos, and some much-needed background music. Altogether, this makes for a stronger presentation than the original. If you haven't watched our video yet, now is the perfect time! You will learn not only about our fundraiser, but about the history of NIA itself. Enjoy!

NIA Fine Art Friday Fundraiser

We are proud to announce the details of our Indiegogo fundraiser campaign, Help Make NIA Fine Art Friday Happen! As the title makes clear, this is your opportunity to support our show in December, which will be the greatest NIA show to date!

The Campaign

Who We Are

NIA stands for Northside Independent Artists. We all live and work on the north side of Chicago, and we give back to the city that inspires us with our art shows.

NIA Fine Art Friday, on December 2nd, will be our fourth show. It is not represented by a gallery or any big arts organization. Like all our shows, it is a grassroots effort created entirely by us. We are designing it, we will promote it, and we will pay for the event costs.

What We Need

Because we’ve done this so many times, we can now anticipate what the costs will be. They include space rental; food and beverages for our guests; print materials, including posters, flyers and postcards; hardware for hanging art; and event d├ęcor.

We always sell art at our shows, but we also spend at least as much as we earn on event costs. This is not a sustainable model, and we will not be able to continue doing shows at a loss.

We are asking you to help us pay for NIA Fine Art Friday event costs. Any contribution is welcome – even a $5 donation will help us get closer to our goal.

Why It Matters

For some of us, the NIA shows represent our only opportunity to present our work to the public, interact with fans, and earn any money from our art. This also means that fans will only get the chance to see most of this work at a NIA show. Your donation literally affects dozens of people.

For all of us, the shows present valuable learning experiences, as we expand our knowledge of event planning, organization, marketing and promotion. The NIA shows make us better equipped to contribute our time and talents to any number of culturally enriching events. By supporting NIA today, you are "paying it forward", helping to nurture all those future events we will create or enhance.

Why You Should Help

If you’re a friend or family member of a NIA artist, you know how much this show means to us. Help us realize our dream.

Maybe you’re someone who plans to attend the show in December. You can ensure that it actually happens by making a donation today.

If you would like to attend the show, but know that you will be unable to, you can still make your presence felt with a donation. It is the next best thing to spending your money on a piece of artwork.

Finally, if you’re simply someone who is moved and inspired by our story – the story of non-famous artists with a lot of ambition – please contribute to this fundraiser.

If you can't help monetarily at this time, then please help spread the word by sharing this campaign on your favorite social media. Maybe one of your friends will make the donation that causes us to hit our goal!

You Be The Artist Night

You Be The Artist Night
Saturday, Jun 18, 2016; 7:00pm – 10:00pm

You have just come to a realization: you are constantly doing things for others. Kids, friends, and co-workers have you at their beck and call. When was the last time you did something for you? What did I just hear you say??? It’s been months…right? Well, today is the day you stop, take a breath and decide you are going to do something fun and creative! We all have those artistic ideas rolling around in our minds, and we ask ourselves, can I really do this? You can!

On June 18th, ChiPRC and NIA are hosting You Be The Artist Night! You will have the opportunity to meet NIA*, a group of local artists, who will show you how to do what they do! They are experts in drawing, painting, mixed media and many other techniques, and they will share their knowledge with you. After some initial demonstrations, you (the artist) will have the chance to apply what you have learned! It is a great way to meet friends and learn something new. Whether you have never touched a paintbrush before, or whether you are comfortable with the term ‘substrate’, you will have free rein to be the artist! Let loose and experiment! Every guest gets a blank canvas to fill with their ARTIEST ideas!

Professional artists Dean Johnson, Christopher Berry, Terrie Byrne, and Christina Bosco will be on hand to teach you the techniques that will give you the confidence to create long after You Be The Artist Night is over.

This event is BYOB. You may register by clicking here.

* Ticket sales for You Be The Artist Night go to support NIA Fine Art Friday, a group exhibit scheduled for December 2 at ChiPRC. Everyone who attends the class is warmly invited to our show!

We Introduce NIA

Welcome to the official blog for NIA, Northside Independent Artists! We are a rotating stable of artists who live and work on Chicago's north side. Geography is our similarity; beyond that, we are a diverse collective.

We represent disciplines across the spectrum of art-making, from traditional painting to cutting-edge mixed media. We are a cross-section of the arts practices that are happening in studios across Chicago.

Primarily, NIA exists to produce and curate art shows featuring work by its members. We have produced three shows to date, with a fourth show (NIA Fine Art Friday) scheduled for December 2.

In 2016, NIA is expanding its mission. We will host a workshop, an online fundraiser, and multiple wine tastings! These events will culminate in the aforementioned show, which opens at 8pm on December 2 at ChiPRC.

Please check this website often for updates on all of these events, and join our e-mail list by writing to!
