Thanks for the Memories!

Thank you to everyone who braved the cold to come to our art show last night! Your warmth and enthusiasm made all our hard work worthwhile. It was a smallish crowd (approximately 25 people), but everyone who came engaged wholeheartedly with the art and the artists. Our guests were sincerely interested in our work and our artistic processes, and we appreciated the opportunity to receive feedback. In addition, we were grateful and proud to see two of our artists make sales. When one of us has success, it is a success for us all.

NIA Fine Art Friday brings to a close a full year of work that involved meetings, fundraisers, group and solo art-making, event planning, marketing & promotion, and the installation and execution of our exhibit. Some of our efforts proved more effective than others, but we learned by doing. Each of us has evolved and can apply her experience toward any number of future artistic endeavors.

What becomes of the NIA concept now? For now, we are taking a hiatus as each artist focuses on new projects and goals. Christopher W. Berry is working on deepening his connection to the abstract art community. Christina Bosco and Terrie Byrne are looking into entering art fairs and festivals. Dean Johnson is completing private commissions.

When NIA returns, some of us will have moved on, and there might be some new faces -- as there have always been through our storied history. NIA will continue to make room for emerging artists to gain hands-on experience and interaction with potential fans and buyers.

Like true artists, we will create something out of nothing. For now, we return to the void.

To fans of NIA, thanks for the memories!

And thanks to ChiPRC for hosting our event!

Get To Know NIA

NORTHSIDE INDEPENDENT ARTISTS is a grassroots collective. Its members each reside on Chicago's north side. Their individual artistic visions are as diverse as the sights and sounds of the city that has nurtured them.

Over the course of three group exhibits and three smaller preview events, NIA has provided a forum for emerging artists to feature their work. More than that, NIA gives artists valuable experience. To date, the artists themselves have been responsible for planning, curating, installing, and promoting all of their shows.

NIA empowers its artists to take their careers to the next level. It is also founded on the revolutionary principle of sharing knowledge and power, for one can only rise up when one's community rises too.

You Be The Artist Night

When was the last time you did something for you? It's time to stop, take a breath, and decide you are going to do something fun and creative! We all have those artistic ideas rolling around in our minds, and we ask ourselves, can I really do this? You can!

On Saturday, November 5, you will have the opportunity to work with NIA! A quick glance through our Artists page will show you that we bring a diverse set of skills to the table, from painting and drawing, to mixed media collage work.

We are ready to share our knowledge with you in a series of live demos, after which you will be let loose to take over the art studio! We will have all kinds of art supplies on hand for you to play with, from pastels to paint. The whole NIA team will be with you to answer your questions about the materials.

This is your chance to let loose and experiment! Each guest gets a blank canvas to fill with their ARTIEST ideas! Whether you have never touched a paintbrush, or whether you are comfortable with the term 'substrate', you will have free reign to be the artist!

This event is BYOB. For more information and registration, click here.

Do You Miss the Party Lights

Saturday's NIA Gallery Party was a big success! Maybe that's why we all look so triumphant in the photo above. Clockwise from left: Christina Bosco, Dean Johnson, Terrie Byrne, and Christopher Berry (kneeling).

We totally achieved our goals for this event. We sold six of the nine wine glasses we had hand-painted, and several people left donations in a freewill jar. All of those proceeds will help to pay for NIA Fine Art Friday, our December 2 art show.

Below are some pictures from the show, including photos of the artists with their displays. We all agreed beforehand that the party would serve as a preview for NIA Fine Art Friday, so we limited ourselves to three pieces each.

Above, you see Christopher Berry with his lively, abstract pieces. The party was Christopher's first NIA show, but he has been working with us all year to shape the trajectory of NIA. We're so glad to have you with us, Chris! Check out more of his work on instagram.

Next, you see Christina Bosco with two of her beautifully expressive paintings. This was Christina's third NIA event, although she always manages to surprise us with her inimitable vision. Christina is one of those artists whose work continually evolves and matures. You can view her website here.

Above is Dean Johnson with some of his pop cut-outs. Along with Terrie Byrne, Dean is a founder of NIA, but he always says the concept is bigger than the artists who participate. NIA is already making good on that idea, drawing in new talent and setting more ambitious goals. Dean's website is here.

As usual, we didn't manage to snag a shot of our host, Terrie Byrne, standing still! She was too busy graciously attending to everyone's needs. Above, you see two of her timelessly elegant paintings. Terrie's website is undergoing renovations, so the best way to follow her is on Facebook.
